Two recently published studies found a link between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and increased risk of benign breast disease (i.e., breast disease that is not cancerous) and increased risk of stroke.
A study that was recently published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found a link between use of estrogen for HRT and increased risk for benign breast disease (i.e., breast disease that is not cancerous). Benign breast disease makes breast tissue slightly denser and could be precursor to breast cancer. The new study highlights how important it is for women taking estrogen to speak with their physicians about benefits and risks related to continued treatment.
A second study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, reported that HRT is associated with an increased risk of stroke. This study also provided some evidence that lower doses of HRT and a shorter time actually taking the drugs may decrease the risk of stroke.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Although physicians should be aware of the risks and benefits of HRT, women taking these medications should continue to speak to their physicians about how long they have been taking estrogen, their dose of estrogen, and how long they should remain on therapy.
For women taking estrogen, doing monthly self-breast exams is important, and they should report any changes in their breast to a physician immediately. In addition, all women taking HRT
should have a mammogram once a year, and they should mention to the technician that they are taking estrogen.
